The grimlocks are blind, which is the heart of my recommendation: don't just populate with petrification monsters. They noped out after fighting the three basilisks and some animated statues, but had they gone further in, I was planning to use the grimlocks to run interference for the medusa, whose main tactic was going to be to use the crisscrossing tunnels and stone bridges in the caves she inhabited to keep out of the PCs' melee range while subjecting them to the petrification gaze. I recently had a dungeon for my players that was inhabited by a medusa, three basilisks, some shriekers, some animated armors (i.e., the petrified remains of previous adventurers, described as statues) and a number of grimlocks. If you do the above, suddenly they have to worry about getting pushed into corners, Opportunity Attacks, and maybe even still give them a Restoration Potion and terrain/hallways too to add more planning. The players will be fighting and constantly have to look out as a circle on the battle map will, on the next round, be Petrifying and so they'll need to attack and get moving out of the way. Instead of an instant-use "everyone roll or suck", make it a Petrifying Cloud. ![]() You've limitted the resource of curing and of using the cure-tactical and interesting.Ī cooler example imo is stolen from Dark Souls Depths level, since I see similarities in its Curse debuff and DnD's Petrification: Change Petrifying Gaze so it has a round delay. Give them preemptive ways to cure it but as a limitted resource, with terrain or hallways to access those resources in a tough spot. Players love puzzle fights because they're memorable. In this fight, you'll need to give them a way to make the fight tactical. Normally, in a Medusa fight for example, the tactic comes from avoiding the gaze.
